Update

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to give a quick update on how I am doing since you gave me such great support before

I have now had 3 sessions with my grief councillor which have been really helpful but I have been very stressed and anxious since my dads birthday in October it has taken me a while but I have finally visited the doctors and been put on anti depressants which I hope begin to work very soon. I have also made the decision to quit university I felt that it was getting too much for me to cope with the work load and commitment on very little sleep and had no concentration I'm panicking abit about what to do next but know it was the right thing to do.

Thank you again for all the support

Jen

Jen,

I'm glad to hear you've been seeing a grief counselor and that you're doing the best for you, that is so important. You can always return to school later when it's a better time for you. It can take up to a month for the meds to start working fully, but some people find results right away, I hope that is the case for you and you find some relief to the stress you've been under. Thanks for sharing your report with us!

I don't know which is worse the grief and depression feelings or the side effects of the medication I was told to expect side effects for up to a week once I started taking them but they are driving me mad I'm not prepared to give up on them as I know it will be good in the long run its just a bit of a nightmare at the moment.

I hope you will talk to your doctor about the side effects. There are many different medications, perhaps another one would work better for you. A lot of people choose to treat depression naturally rather than medicate, such as through meditation. It depends on whether yours is chemically caused, also the severity. I was treated for depression when my husband of 23 years got a divorce. After George and I were married, my doctor weaned me off the medication. Mine was situational rather than chemical based. At that time, no one had suggested meditation to me, although I was spending a great deal of time in prayer. When George passed, my doctor asked if I wanted medication and I declined, citing that it was situational and nothing was going to change that, I just needed to get used to how my life was now, but I didn't want to get dependent on something if I didn't have to. In looking back, I might have benefited from something, but by the same token, I have made it through it. However, perhaps I wouldn't have made the choice to remarry had I not had such strong feelings of despair...medication might have softened that. It's an individual choice that only you and your doctor can make. I would say if a person feels suicidal, definitely get help from a doctor.

I was on anti depressants before for about 8-9 years and when I made the decision to come off them early 2014 it was a nightmare I had such a difficult time in the end it took me about 3 months of dropping the dosage by 1mg a week to do it but I finally did it. It took me a long time to admit that I needed help again and go back on them but the problem is I've been on so many different ones before that it's hard to find one which agrees and is effective but saying that I have decided if I'm still feeling like this on Monday I will go back and see if they can offer me something different

Can you try one that worked for you before, or have they taken it off the market?

The one that worked before was a nightmare to get off of so I want to avoid going back on it others once I tried to go back on them they didn't work so well again but I think it might be because I'm putting too much pressure on myself to get over things and be ok again

Yeah, definitely give yourself time. It's okay to need help.
