MartyT
NEWSLETTER This month's issue of Grief Watch features articles with the theme Young and Widowed: When the word widow comes up, I'll admit that the image that comes to mind first is a little old lady, probably in her 80's, with short white hair and a hobby of knitting or crocheting. My initial concerns for her are who will drive her around if she needs a ride, will she be eating too many meals alone, does she have a support system of other little white and grey haired women to support her and keep her active in card groups and book groups. Honestly, I picture someone like my grandma, or a number of her friends, that are on their own following the death of spouses late in life. What does not immediately come to mind for me is the large number of widows and widowers out there that are just out of college and newly married, or raising young children, or in their 40's with stable lives and jobs and families which have now been thrown into utter chaos. kayc
Includes article for grieving on the 4th of July! I remember that so well, just a couple weeks after George died...I was invited to my daughter's friend's bash, but of course was not up to hearing gaiety and laughter. I did go to my town's 4th of July picnic, which was helpful not to be alone, but when I came home, discovered his closet rod had broken and dumped all his clothes on the floor, forcing me to do something with them. Talk about a nudging! I boxed them up and put them on his side of the bedroom. Several weeks later I took them to Sponsors, his favorite charity, I knew it's what he'd want done with them, holding onto favorites of his clothing. Other than him dying on Father's Day, the 4th of July was the first holiday I had to deal with after his death. The first of the year of the firsts without If 4th of July looms hard for you, read the article in Marty's link.

MartyT
This from Nan Zastrow of Wings - A Grief Education Ministry: What do you think? The holiday season isn’t far off and coping can be especially difficult if it’s the first year after the death. Some people find comfort in maintaining honored family traditions; and for others, this may be unbearably painful. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate. Avoiding the grief/pain will only make it harder. The best way to cope is to plan ahead. Will you cherish the old memories? Or create something new? What ideas, rituals, or traditions can you share with our readers that can honor the memories and comfort the bereaved this year.
