The following comes to us from Susan Levine, Executive Director of Hospice of the Valley:

Dear friends -

As a healthcare leader Hospice of the Valley strives to raise community awareness about end-of-life care topics and to develop innovative programs to address major health issues such as dementia. Here are some recent highlights we would like to share with you:

National expert addresses tough healthcare issues

Ira Byock, MD, spoke last month to community physicians and healthcare leaders at a dinner sponsored by Hospice of the Valley. Byock is the author of the recently-released book The Best Care Possible. He is director of palliative medicine at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, New Hampshire.

"We Baby Boomers need to get back in our game," he said. "We transformed the birth process, making it a personal experience, not a medical event....The same transformation needs to take place at end of life. It's time to take it back." Click here for coverage of his address and here for an interview with the Arizona Republic.

Gillian Hamilton, MD, wins award for dementia program

For more than a decade Gillian Hamilton, MD, has been at the forefront of providing high-quality care to persons with dementia. Her most recent recognition from her peers came May 25, when she was presented an award by the Arizona Alzheimer's Consortium. Read More.

Father's Day Remembrance set for June 16

Hospice of the Valley will be hosting a Father's Day Remembrance on Saturday, June 16, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at 1510 E. Flower St., Bldg. 1. The event will provide opportunities to remember and honor our fathers. Register by June 11; call 602.636.5390. See flyer for more details.

Volunteers needed - always!

Lend a hand. Listen to a story. Offer your presence. Just be there. That's the job description for becoming a Hospice of the Valley volunteer. We need patient care volunteers as well as folks who enjoy sharing their talents behind-the-scenes. Click here to find out when the next volunteer orientation will take place in your area.

Thanks for your support. We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer!

Sincerely,

Susan Levine
