The following comes to us from Susan Levine, Executive Director of Hospice of the Valley:

Welcome to Hospice of the Valley's April 2010 ENews. We hope you are enjoying the beautiful spring weather. Thank you for taking the time to read some of our latest news.

Make Your Wishes Known

More than one in four elderly people eventually will need someone to make end-of-life decisions about their medical care, according to a study published April 1 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The results show the value of people making their wishes known in advance directives - living wills and medical power of attorney forms. To learn more about advance directives, visit Health Care Decisions.

Help for Grieving Children

New Song Center for Grieving Children offers grief support for children, teens, young adults and parents or family caregivers. The center also offers grief education for caregivers, community groups, clergy, medical and mental health professionals. Founded in 1989, New Song joined not-for-profit Hospice of the Valley in 2009. The merger created the largest full-spectrum grief support program in Maricopa County, serving thousands of people of all ages Valleywide. To read about it, visit The New Song Center for Grieving Children.

Artist Donates Painting to Friendship Village

Gilbert artist Veronica "Roni" Ross lost her brother and mother within six weeks of one another two years ago. Both spent their final days in rooms at the end of a hallway at Hospice of the Valley's Friendship Village palliative care unit in Tempe. To read Roni's story about grief and healing in the Arizona Republic, visit Woman's Painting for Hospice Recalls Family.

Upcoming Events

We invite you to join us at two upcoming events benefitting Hospice of the Valley: a Tea and Fashion Show, May 2 at the Phoenix Art Museum, and the 8th Annual Nellie Ortega Golf and Wine event on May 2 and 3 in the northwest Valley. For details, visit Special Events.

We appreciate your interest and support and invite you to visit us at hov.org.

Susan Levine
