Welcome to Hospice of the Valley's December 2010 E-News.

The holidays bring good cheer to Hospice of the Valley -- from a fundraiser run and holiday sale benefiting our patients -- to a seasonal charity campaign featuring our dementia program. We also have included an article with useful tips about moving through the holidays after loss.

Frosty's Run on December 19 Benefits HOV

It may not snow, but that won't stop Frosty's Run from taking place Sunday, December 19 in north Phoenix. Presented by All Distance Running Co., the 10-mile run/walk and two-mile fun run/walk benefit Hospice of the Valley. Entry fees are $30 for the 10-mile run/walk and $15 for the two-mile fun run/walk. There is also a complimentary Rudolph's Dash for children 12 and under. This year's event features an abundance of raffle prizes. One complimentary raffle ticket per entry. Pet Connections Calendar

Dementia Program in "Season for Sharing" Spotlight

HOV's Dementia program is featured in this year's "Season for Sharing" promotional campaign by The Arizona Republic and Channel 12. The annual holiday drive raises millions for Valley of the Sun nonprofits, with the Gannett Foundation matching 50 cents on each dollar contributed. Rotary International honors HOV Medical Director Gerrit Terpstra

Gerrit Terpstra, MD, and his wife, Carolee, were honored recently with induction into Rotary International's Arch C. Klumph Society, which recognizes Rotarians who have contributed at a certain level to the service organization's foundation.Dr. Terpstra has served as medical director of HOV's Sun City palliative care unit for eight years. Carolee Terpstra is a retired nurse practitioner. The Terpstras have each served as president of the Sun City del Sol Rotary Club and presently belong to the Peoria North Rotary Club. Tips for Handling Grief During the Holidays

Living with loss is challenging enough, but it can be especially difficult when families gather together to celebrate the holidays and other special occasions. The HOV Bereavement Department has prepared a helpful article with suggestions for coping with the loss of a loved one during the holidays.
