Understanding Why People Die by Suicide

Noon-1:00 pm ET

featuring

Carla Stumpf-Patton EdD, LMHC, NCC, FT, CCTP

Director, Suicide Postvention Programs

Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

When someone we love and care for dies by suicide, it can be overwhelming, confusing, and bring with it many emotions and questions. It can feel like our world has been split into countless fragments where we become detectives trying to understand how and if it will ever fit back together again, which often includes an endless list of questions around why and how this could have happened.

While we may never fully understand the exact thoughts in the mind of our loved one at the time they died, researchers and specialists in the field have come to learn a lot about the suicidal mind. Understanding more around this subject matter can often help survivors of loss in the grieving process as they struggle with the self-directed questions of blame, guilt, doubt, and regret.

This session will address some of the prominent theories around why people die by suicide. It will also explore some of the contributaries and risk factors that can come together in forming the “perfect storm” that leads to suicide, and how survivors of loss can continue to heal with this knowledge.

About the Speaker: Dr. Stumpf-Patton is the surviving spouse of Marine Sgt. Richard Stumpf. She holds an Ed.D. in Education Counseling Psychology and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Fellow Thanatologist. and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.

This webinar is open to the public.

Understanding Why People Die by Suicide

This was an excellent webinar lead by Dr. Carla Stumpf-Patton today and the webinar, as well as the slides, will be available to us soon. I’d like to give a few of my notes in case you don’t have a chance to watch this webinar at a later date.

***There are NO answers – we cannot hold ourselves responsible

***Normal reaction to ask WHY?

“The person who commits suicide is seeking a solution to a problem that is generating intense suffering within themselves.”

***It is a way to escape the intolerable emotion and unbearable pain…

***Thomas Joiner – ideation vs intent – a desire for suicide – two components: “I am a burden.” “I am alone.”

***The suicide person feels hopeless and helpless

***One has access to a means: firearm, knife, rope, or collecting medications

***Warning signs: talking about it, expressing feelings of the situation being unfixable or beyond help, better off without me, isolating, numb the pain

Myths

***Talking about it – the risk is NOT talking about it – every threat must be taken seriously

***Suicidal people want to die. NO, they just want the pain to end

Facts

Suicide does not run in families

Depression is not the only cause of suicide

We must be proactive:

We can educate ourselves by reading about suicide, watching webinars, etc.

Join peer support groups if you are thinking about suicide

Use the many resources that are available to us

Seek counseling

Thank you, dear Anne, for this useful summary. I also found the webinar to be an excellent one ~ most especially the presenter's factual debunking of all the myths surrounding suicide, and her final comments on

What Can Be Done to Help

  • Be proactive - know in advance what to do and where to go for help
  • Gain education, awareness, understanding (support groups, counseling, peer support)
  • Know the resources that are available

In that spirit, I invite those interested to make note of these articles, along with the related links included:

An invitation from our dear friend and colleague, Peggy Haymes, via her website, Heart Callings:

Why even bother?

It's the subtext I heard in the comment from someone on my Facebook page. She'd lived so long this way - why even bother trying to change?

Why even bother?

I have a friend who laments that every time he goes to the doctor these days, whatever the doctor says is prefaced with "Well, you know, people your age..."

I don't know exactly when midlife begins and ends. I consider myself to be in it, although the odds are pretty good I won't live to be 116. I know that for some people it begins in their forties, which makes more sense mathematically. Either way, it's framed by two questions.

Is this all there is? and Why bother?

The first question can get things rolling. If we're not careful, the second one can shut them down. The first question invites us to step back from our lives and take a look beyond our day to day-ness. Are we spending our lives for things that matter in our lives?

For you it may be a question of meaning - do I want to invest myself in something bigger than myself? Or it may be a question of balance. What's being neglected?

I realized the other week that I was feeling out of balance. Fun was too far down the list, so this morning before any chores got done or work was attended to, I did a nearly twelve mile bike ride, then took my dog to the dog park (where he plopped in the park's only mud puddle - repeatedly. But that's another story.) I did things that are fun for me, and my spirit is the better for it.

Why bother can carry lots of meaning. It may be the belief that you're too old to change or to care. It may be the belief that you really don't deserve anything better. Who are you to want something different, something more?

Instead of shooing away those desires like so many pesky flies, midlife invites us to enter into them. Is this desire of wanting something more simply a by product of too many Real Housewives marathons? Or is a nudging from your soul?

And if it is a nudging from your soul, what will you do with it?

Why you should bother is because we all need you to bother. We need the best gifts that you have to offer, whether it's doing something big and world changing or something "small" yet life changing for another person. We need you to live into the fullness of who God created you to be, because in that fullness you have some gifts to share.

But you need to do it for you as well. Because on a Saturday morning it makes your heart smile to see a dog out of his mind with happiness, chasing after a ball then laying down in mud. Because when we are in alignment with the shape of our souls our lives flow. There may still be struggle and pain (you can probably count on that) but you meet them differently.

If you're a woman in your 40's-60's and any of this sounds familiar at all, I invite you to join me for an online retreat, Birthing The Next Chapter. , July 15-August 15.

Check out the details (or sign up) here. If you have a friend who fits the bill, please pass this on to them. not because they need to be "fixed," but because we all need a chance to step back and refocus sometimes.

I hope you'll join me on the 15th.

Peace,

Peggy

The above webinar was OK.  My notes were choppy so I decided to just listen. I think we all have things to learn about suicide. Having support and engaging in self-care is important to the one coming out of a suicide. It's important to know that suicide happens - it's part of life - we should be able to talk about it.

How to Thrive this Holiday Season

Once again another good webinar hosted by Dr. Gloria Horsley, Dr. Heidi Horsley, and Alan Pedersen

Some ideas shared that I found interesting:

When at a gathering and you want to leave – download the Uber App ahead of time so you can leave if you need to without breaking up the gathering

Accept an invitation with a definite “ok now” but I might feel different on the day

Rituals are important – light a candle or go for a walk or spend time in nature

“Pain is with us because we have loved”

If you’re going to be alone – find someone else who will be alone and volunteer

If you don’t feel like making a holiday dinner – compromise - go out to eat

At a dinner toast everyone, not just the one who died

Share stories about the one who died but don’t make them the center

Believe that your perspective will change – you will have joy again

Every year Hospice of the Valley in Arizona has a special community remembrance of our loved ones who died.  It is called Light Up a Life. We can submit a photo of our loved one or bring a photo and display it on a special table and during the ceremony the photos are flashed on a big screen as candles are lit. It is good to gather with those who have lost a loved one.  The times I have attended I always came away feeling better.

WEBINAR: UNDERSTANDING THE GRIEF OF ADDICTION AND OVERDOSE DEATH

DECEMBER 11, 2018, 12:00 PM-1:30 PM EASTERN
AVAILABLE THROUGH DECEMBER 10, 2019

Presented by the TAPS Institute for Hope and Healing®, this webinar with Litsa Williams and Eleanor Haley, mental health professionals and co-founders of What’s Your Grief, is designed to help bereaved people understand the dynamics of this unique kind of grief.  It addresses the unique stigma and family dynamics that can come with grief after a death from substance use, and it delves into issues that begin to influence survivors' experience of grief and loss long before a death occurs, such as struggling with a loved one's substance use disorder.
