Update And Bump In The Road...

Recommended Posts

I had emergency knee surgery Friday. I tore my ACL, medial meniscus, and lateral meniscus back in April 2005, then both meniscus subsequently in June 2006. I turned the wrong way trying to catch the door at the nursing home Thursday night. And felt as well as heard a snap and pop. Within an hour it was very swollen and stiff and I developed a fever overnight with redness, warmth and immense amount of fluid in and around the knee. Which apparently can become infected with the trauma to it. Had an emergent MRI which clearly showed both meniscus completely torn again. It had to be taken care of right away because of the fluid and infection. So I had surgery Friday afternoon. Got IV antibiotics until today. Came home today. In a knee immobilizer and with crutches. And a fancy ice machine that hooks to a device at my knee to cool it for swelling. It's basically a cooling chemical instead of the old fashioned real ice! My son is with me. He's seeing his Mom at the nursing home and taking care of things there. So, a little bump in the road here.

Update on Baby Jackson. He is still in Memphis. He had a stroke. He had emergent surgery to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure. He isn't stable enough to get flown back to CA. His days are numbered sadly. Mark and his wife are having a lot of trouble making the right decisions regarding when enough is enough as far as measures to relieve the worsening effects of the tumors. I mean how does a parent make the decision to just stop it all.

I'm very medicated.

Mary's Yale appointment is rescheduled from Friday to next week. Our son will take her.

I've got to try to sleep now.

I'm so sorry, Butch, to learn this latest news. It's good to know that your son is there with you. You have so much on your plate right now. Please be careful on those crutches, take good care of yourself, and know that we are thinking of you . . .

Butch, I am so sorry to hear about this latest setback. I have injured my meniscus and know how painful it can be, I can't imagine throwing the ACL in there! I hope your healing goes smoothly and quickly and I'm glad you have your son there to help. I will pray the parents of baby Jackson will know when it is time to let go, my heart really goes out to them, all that is within us naturally wants to hold on to our child, I can't imagine being in these circumstances. I hope all goes well with Mary at her appointment and I'm so glad your son will be there with her. Please continue to post as you can...I hope you can rest today!

Oh, my goodness. I am sorry to hear about your knee surgery, Butch. Heal quickly. I like those new chemical cooling pack ~ I am still using mine on the knee I twisted and after my dental bone graft they gave me one to keep the swelling down on my mouth. For a few days I looked like a chipmunk hoarding nuts. Be extra careful as you take the pain medication. I am so glad that your son is there with you.

I continue to pray for the family and little Jackson.

Give Mary a hug from me.

Butch,

I am so very sorry to hear about the knee surgery. I've had a torn ACL and other knee issues. I hope the healing continues. I am holding you, Mary, and Baby Jackson in my heart and praying for peace and comfort for all of the family. You are all facing such terribly difficult times. It is time for some relief and some rest.

You rest and heal, and know that others can pick up some of the load you have so loyally carried for so long. Heal, then you can return to your place in the family again. My love and best thoughts to you and Mary.

How is it going? Do you know how long you'll be off work? How long can your son be with you? Praying for you and Mary and Baby Jackson and his parents...

Thank you everyone.

First off, Jackson gained his angel wings at 4:30 this morning. He was in his Mommy and Daddy's arms. His big brother and sister flew in last night because they knew the time was very near. So he was surrounded by his family. Our hearts are broken for Mark and his family. Of course they have all of our family's prayers.

Mary had her Yale appointment and they have raised her MS medication. Our son and his girlfriend have been great in picking up the slack from my immobilization. I will be starting PT in another ten days. It will be a long, painful, and cranky road back. But I've done it before. However, I was younger.

Jackson's family are going back to CA tomorrow. Services to follow. I cannot begin to imagine losing my own child... Let alone a two year old. And burying him.

Sorry for the somber news.

Please just pray for his family.

He is in his Auntie Shannon's arms now. How sweet is that. And many others.

Goodnight.

Butch, prayers for all of little Jackson's family, including you and Mary. Bless his little heart, he is beyond the need for prayers, and he will no longer suffer. I have lost a child, and I know the grief and disbelief his parents are feeling. My prayers are with them particularly.

Butch, I'm so sorry they had to suffer this loss, I can't imagine the pain they must be in. At least they know he's being cared for and is with Shannon now.

Yes, you will make it through therapy again...you may be older but you have something some young ones don't and that is the stick-to-it-iveness that is so necessary. So many here going through so much! Our hearts and prayers continue with you.

Butch,

It's been a few days, wondering how you and Mary are doing...and little Baby Jackson's parents, if you've heard anything.

Keeping you all in prayer...

Update from Butch:

I'm sorry it's been so long between updates. I just tried to post a new update on the forum and it all vanished as I went to post it... Very frustrating. . I can't really type it all again right now as I am tending to Mary. To make a long story short, she was misdiagnosed with MS and has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). I will explain all soon. When I have more than a few minutes.
