Sister Not Doing Well

Recommended Posts

Oh QMary, I am so sorry to learn this latest news about your sister. Your experience reminds me so much of the time my mother was in a nursing home (she, too, had suffered a stroke and couldn't be cared for at home). Instead of just being her daughter, I felt as if I had to act as a Director of Nursing the entire time she was there. I do understand how incredibly difficult this is for you, for your sister, and for your entire family ~ and I am so sorry. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers ~ and DO take good care of YOU while you are watching over your sister's care!

QMary,

I am so sorry for what your sister is going through and you watching her go through it. I felt, too, like I had to be my mother's advocate and things they SHOULD have thought of or done I had to bring up to them and follow through to make sure they complied, sometimes they didn't and I had to address them more strongly. So important to have someone in this role for the patient that can't take charge for themselves.

If you notice any sign of anything, I hope you'll get in to your doctor asap

My niece reported to me yesterday that she had gone to see her Mom. She had to gown up and wear gloves, but she said Lois is in good spirits, and they ARE doing therapy, not probably as intensive as when they take her to the therapy room, but nevertheless, they are still working with her. The also good news is that the diarrhea is better, so perhaps the antibiotics for that are working. She said they had her Mom up in the wheelchair, and I don't think they would do that if the diarrhea was as intense as it was for a couple of days. I am not planning to try to go over until she is out of quarantine, it is too long a trip for just a very short visit. She really cannot talk easily on the phone, so I am relying on my niece to tell her I am missing her and I love her.

QMary,

I, too, and going these are favorable signs, and it certainly sounds as though they are.

I will be holding Lois, you, and the family in prayer.

I hope there is good news again tomorrow.

Namaste,

fae

  • 2 weeks later...

My sister is now out of quarantine, I will probably try to go over to Ash Flat next week. The staff of the nursing home met with my BIL and the children. They are saying that she is not progressing at the rate that medicare requires in order for medicare to continue paying for the rehab. They are giving her two more weeks, and after that, the rehab and medicare may be done! She has had so many setbacks, pneumonia, and the c.diff, how can they expect that she would progress at a fast rate. I am hoping they will cut her a little slack. If the rehab stops, she will never go home!

Government regulation at its best

My dear Mary, my heart just hurts for you, as I can only imagine how helpless and how powerless you must feel in this awful situation. I am so sorry.

Please know that we're all keeping you and your dear sister in our thoughts and prayers.

I am so very glad that your sister is out of quarantine. Our health care system makes my blood boil! I hope that she can get back to her rehab soon. Has the c.diff been taken care of? Keeping you close and sending you hugs.

Oh, Mary, I am glad she is out of qua tee but for Her to be deprived of PT is a crime. Is there a person who can go to bat for her to Medicare....this is ridiculous. Is her own physician some one who will contact medicare on her behalf. Welcome to our health care system....I am just so sorry. This is worth a fight...a demand. I would not go quietly.

QMary,

I am so sorry about this latest news. Could the doctor write to the health care and request an exception due to the extra conditions she's had to deal with lately? It seems that should be considered! Sometimes they just spout jargon w/o looking at the whole picture.

Well, all we have to do is just stick around, and things always change. My sister is back in quarantine, new tests show the c.diff is back (if it ever left) I have no faith in the care she is getting for this in the nursing home. I think the family should insist on sending her back to the hospital. They have ordered a drug, Banatrol, which is supposed to be better for patients on a stomach peg/with c.diff, but it is backordered since last Friday, they may actually get it by tomorrow.............grrrrr. On a positive note, however, she is experiencing more movement in her left arm and hand, and starting to feel when she needs to use bathroom, where up to now she has had no sensations. AND her swallowing is better, and they are hoping to do a new swallow test. If they do, and it is good, she might be able to start actually eating real food to some degree. Forgive my venting...so much is going on right now in our family. My newly x-son in law has fluid in his lungs, they drained some out, and ran tests. The tests resulted in them setting him up an appointment in Fayetteville with a lung specialist. So, I will be taking him over there. He has no family here but us, and really no friends that he can ask to do this. Every day brings something new......Just have to trust that everything will work out well.

Boy, when are you going to get a break, QMary. I'm happy to hear that your sister is beginning to experience some movement. It will be a happy day when she can eat on her own. Oh, I too wish she were not in that nursing home.

I will be keeping your "newly x-son in law" in my prayers. It's good that he will be seeing a lung specialist.

Hang in there, QMary and never apologize for "venting."

Oh, Mary, what news you have to bear and your whole family. I am so sorry. If she went back to the hospital, she becomes eligible to go to wherever she can get the best care...as long as she goes from hospital to care center. I think that is accurate....we went through this with my mom..hospital rehab hospital rehab....law may have changed.

Good that her body is responding better but I know you are all so worried and rightly so.

I carry you in my heart as always.

Mary
