The following comes to us from Susan Levine, Executive Director of Hospice of the Valley:

At Hospice of the Valley, caring means embracing the richness of life in our community - from family life and different cultures to musical expression. This month's highlights include a music therapy jam session captured on HOV's YouTube channel, our upcoming Hispanic conference offering Spanish-language presentations, and our annual Father's Day Remembrance event.

Father's Day Remembrance June 18

Hospice of the Valley will host a Father's Day Remembrance from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 at 1510 E. Flower St., Building 1, Phoenix, 85014. Facilitated by HOV bereavement counselors, the program will allow participants to reflect on what their fathers taught them about the "art of living." Attendees are asked to bring a photo and special item representing their father to display on a remembrance table. Register by June 8 by calling 602-636-5390.

HOV Hispanic Conference for Spanish-speaking community

Hospice of the Valley's Hispanic Program will engage the Spanish-speaking community with a free conference on Saturday, June 18, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 3140 N. 51st Ave., Phoenix 85031. The conference will offer Spanish-language presentations on HOV's hospice services, dementia program, advance directives and bereavement support. Music therapy on YouTube

It was a flashback to the '70's at HOV's inpatient Ryan House II with live music by the likes of Steppenwolf, Bonnie Rait, and Tommy James & the Shondells. Center stage was HOV music therapist Danielle Franklin and patient Steve Samos. Both played guitars and ukulele. Steve sometimes flipped his over to double as drums. "It's not often that I actually get to play with a patient," Danielle said. "That was magic." Steve felt the same way. "I've made a new friend. So I'm thrilled," he said. Susan Levine appointed to Harvard Council

Hospice of the Valley Executive Director Susan Levine was appointed to the Harvard Medical School Health Care Policy Advisory Council. The council is comprised of distinguished leaders who provide a "real world" perspective on the programs and activities of the medical school's Department of Health Care Policy, which helps shape national policy. Susan was appointed to the three-year term by the dean of the Harvard School of Medicine.

Mahalo Mondays and kick-off mixer July 5

The New Song Center for Grieving Children, a program of Hospice of the Valley, has been selected as the not-for-profit beneficiary of Mahalo Mondays at Hula's Modern Tiki in July. Hula's will donate 10 percent of the day's gross proceeds on Mondays in July to New Song Center. Join New Song for a kick-off mixer Tuesday, July 5 at 6 p.m. (in place of Monday, July 4 when Hula's is closed). Hula's is located at 4700 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. New Song Center offers grief support for children, teens, young adults and parents/family caregivers.

May your summer be filled with music, laughter, healing and fun.
